Skidaway Island State Park

Starting off this list is the Skidaway Island State Park, located not too far from Savannah’s Historic District. Trails leading to a boardwalk and an observatory tower are made more beautiful with the ambiance only created by spanish moss and salty marshes. Get a taste of the salty air while keeping an eye out for fiddler crabs and other critters. This area is camping friendly, with an RV parking area on site and picnic areas for celebrations. Kids will get a kick out of the 20-foot sloth statue and pets are allowed in the park and park’s campsites. With a small fee per car that comes to visit, Skidaway Island State Park is an affordable place where you can relax and enjoy coastal views with your friends and family.

As early as the 19050s, Wormsloe Historic Site has been the kind of place that people want to use as a backdrop to movie scenes and even music videos. Spanish moss coats over 400 oak trees that line this iconic walkway. Next time you want to watch Magic Mike XXL or the Last Song, keep your eyes peeled for visions of this site. Wormsloe is a popular destination for people taking portraits for a multitude of celebrations from weddings to senior photos. Make sure to get plenty of research done before visiting, passes for Wormsloe are pricey in comparison to other locations, but are well worth the money spent. Everyone knows that the most cinematic, extra, out of this world portraits are the ones taken on the Wormsloe Historic Site. Outside of the obvious photo opportunity, Wormsloe Historic Site is full of information that you can ingest from their short film and long tour. Set aside at least half of your day to find out all you can about this iconic site.

Savannah Botanical Gardens

For an even more affordable option in the realm of botanical beauty, the Savannah Botanical Gardens is waiting for you on Eisenhower Dr. Creating a perfect little getaway right in the middle of town, the Savannah Botanical Gardens is an oasis of flowers and statues and photography opportunities around every corner. Known for being the kind of place that you want to rent for weddings and other parties, this garden is simple yet effective in the sense that they don’t feel too over the top in comparison to other venues. Access to the garden for groups of people under 10 is completely free so take full advantage of this deal when you can. Open to the public every day from 8 am – 8 pm, the Savannah Botanical Gardens is always ready to have your group stop and smell the flowers. If you want to make the trip into a history lesson, don’t look any further than the historic Reinhard House that resides on the same property. Constructed in the early 1800s, this house was actually moved from its original residence closer to downtown in an attempt to avoid being demolished. Understood to be one of only two “pre-Civil War” farmhouses in Savannah, just taking a look at the outside of this home can teach you a lot about historic Savannah as it was known before.

Wildlife in Savannah Georgia

Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1927, the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge started out as a sanctuary for the birds that would migrate this way with the changing seasons. This refuge is big enough to have residence in both Savannah and South Carolina, giving the many animals that utilize the area plenty of space to exist comfortably. Bird watching is the activity that you will want to engage in while you’re out strolling through this gorgeous space. With the amount of room available to the animals, you will have a great time seeking out individual species to look at. No entrance fee is needed to gain access to these grounds but you will want to take your own car. Cell signal is not the best at the refuge and you may have trouble calling a ride once you’re all tired out from exploring and sightseeing.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

People come to Savannah to visit Leopold’s Ice Cream from all over the world. This iconic little ice cream shop on Broughton St is notorious for having a quick moving line that extends past the door on any open day. Don’t worry though, this crew is efficient and will get you in and out so fast that you forget the line existed to begin with. Open daily at 11 am, Leopold’s is a fun stop to make anytime you want to get lost in a taste of nostalgia and ice cream with a reputation for tasting extravagant. If the line happens to be getting longer when you walk up, just call ahead and pre-order a pint. Walking around Savannah eating ice cream is yet another excuse to take in the aesthetic beauty that this historic city has to offer. Before you leave the premises though, make sure to take a couple of photos while you’re at it. Pictures taken at Leopold’s Ice Cream are guaranteed to get you plenty of internet points.

Fort Pulaski

Open throughout the year, Fort Pulaski is a popular monument to visit regardless of the weather, though a warmer day leaves more room to comfortably explore without needing to bundle up too much. The wind is known to pick up on any day regardless of the warmth so consider that as you get ready for your Fort Pulaski visit. Don’t consider this visit to be a short one, you will need at least two hours to get a decent picture of Fort Pulaski, maybe even more than that. From the stories that the park rangers have to tell to the nature and aesthetic beauty, Fort Pulaski is a historic trip as much as it is just a beautiful place to visit. Outside of major holidays, you can plan a trip to Fort Pulaski any day that suits you from 9 am – 5 pm, with final entrance to the fort at 4:30 pm.

Old Fort Jackson

Savannah’s oldest standing brick fort is located on the banks of the Savannah River, called Old Fort Jackson. From 9 am – 5 pm daily, you are able to take a walk through history to see where soldiers would watch out for ships in times of war. Featuring a display of old weapons and daily interactive programming for history lovers of all ages, Old Fort Jackson is more than just a historic structure sitting in front of a great view. Get to know some of Savannah’s history on a sunny day at Old Fort Jackson next time you’re in the mood for some interesting information and the chance to see a real cannon fired. Closed only on major holidays, Old Fort Jackson is open every day with plenty of reasons to explore at less than twenty dollars per ticket.

Fort McCallister

Only about ten miles outside of Savannah, Fort McCallister is a favorite for road trips, field trips, family trips and more. Located on the Ogeechee River, Fort McCallister houses many years worth of history with a beautiful view to take in. Explore the grounds and see the canons up close before heading to the museum and gift shop to watch a video presentation. Vast and expansive, you can make a trip to Fort McCallister last for hours if you’d like as there always seems to be more to explore. You can make this trip into an early one since they are open every day from 7 am – 10 pm, much longer than the other forts mentioned on this compilation. Because Savannah was the first established colony in all of Georgia, we have seen a lot of military activity over the years and are able to enjoy the historic significance of a number of forts.

Known also as an awesome music venue, the Georgia State Railroad Museum is full of photo ops along with information. Kids and adults will get a kick out of the real, working handcar and the guided train tour. Visit the Georgia State Railroad museum any day outside of major holidays from 9 am – 4 pm and explore the historic side of Savannah’s railroads. Antiques of all kinds wait inside of this museum’s property and the amount of outdoor space allows for many groups to enter without taking up too much space. Take your time walking around and getting an in depth look at historic trains from Georgia and the US. Though this is technically not a one hundred percent outdoor experience, all of the best stuff is outside at the Georgia State Railroad Museum so let that be part of your morning or early afternoon next time you want a history lesson.

Once you have visited Bonaventure Cemetery, you might start to notice that Savannah’s residents and establishments love to reference this place. Most notably, Bonaventure Cemetery was used as the backdrop for many scenes in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, a book turned movie that was directed by Clint Eastwood. In a pop culture sense, Bonaventure Cemetery is worth a visit for bragging rights alone but don’t get too caught up in that aspect. What makes this ancient cemetery a popular place for visitors is the amount of history housed within the gates. Statues, spanish moss, headstones in a multitude of languages, no matter where you look in Bonaventure you will find a beautiful piece of classic history. Bring the camera and be prepared to never want to leave once you start to get lost in the darker beauty of this iconic location. Some might even say that Bonaventure Cemetery is the most beautiful in all the world.
